In a knowledge-based economy, intellectual property (IP) is a key element in value creation. China recognizes the importance of IP in developing an innovation system. How IP should be protected, managed, valuated, and commercialized has become a significant question for various professions and industries which want to move up the global value chain.

With a sound legal system, a strong IP protection regime and world-class professional services, Hong Kong is well-poised to serve as an IP business hub helping enterprises and inventors to realize the value of their intangible assets. Specifically, Hong Kong can serve as a hub connecting Mainland China and the rest of the world by leveraging the Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperation framework. In view of this, Savantas Policy Institute joined hands with S.T.A.R.S. Foundation, Hong Kong Institute of Patent Practitioners and Chinese American Semi-conductor Professional Association (Silicon Valley Headquarters) to start a two-day “International IP Commercialization Conference” at the Hong Kong Science Park today (23 February 2012). We were honoured to have invited Mr. Gregory So, Secretary of Commerce and Economic Development, Mr. Peter Cheung, Director of Intellectual Property Department and Mrs. Regina Ip, Chair of Savantas Policy Institute, to share their insights into IP business development in Hong Kong. Over 10 IP experts spoke on recent trends of international IP activities. Over a hundred participants from various professions attended the conference. The conference will continue tomorrow at Hong Kong Productivity Council from 9:30am to 6:00pm.
